POLICE COURT.

THIS DAY. (Before Mr S. E. McCarthy, SAL) The Drunkards.—Four first-offenders were fined 10/ each and costs, while Edward Knox was fined £ 1 and costs for a second offence within six months. A youth, who was a first-offender, was found helplessly drunk on Sunday in Wyndham-street, and was fined 10/ and costs. Broken By-law.—A cabman named Thomas Flaimigan pleaded guilty to overcrowding his cab. but when he explained that one of his passengers was a lady who was seriously ill. he was convicted and discharged. William Stewart and Alfred Butt, who drove vehicles around a corner in the city at other than a w»lking pace, were fined 10/ each and costs. David Woods was fined £ 1 and costs for leaving a vehicle standing without a. horse in Fort-street, on January 9 and 10. A Neglectful Settler.—A Waikumete settler named Cecil Stock was prosecuted by Mr C. A. Oawkwell. clerk to the Waitemata County Council (represented by Mr MeVeagh) for neglecting to remove noxious weeds from the roadway opposite his property. He contended that although he hail not exactly complied with the Act, he had done a good deal of work, and more than most of his neighbours. The Magistrate replied that from the evidence he was satisfied that traffic on the read had been imprded through the weeds, and the defendant had had six months' notice to remove them. He imposed the maximum fine of £ 5, -with costs totalling .£ 4 13/.
