TRADES and LABOUR COUNCIL.

The committee of the Trades and Labour Council met last evening, Mr. T. Phillips presiding.

Railway Tunnels: The Under-Rtcrctary for the Public Works Department wrote in reply to a communication from the Council in reference to this matter that the' construction of tunnels on ' railways is work of an entirely different character to that carried on in coal and gold mines. Government tunnelling was always under the control of engineers skilled in such work,.who took care to provide efficient ventilation appliances for the supply of fresh air and the carrying off of noxious fumes. Under the circumstances it was not considered necessary to arrange for. any other supervision than that already provided. The letter was received.

The Case of the Glass-Blowers: It was decided to instruct Mr. A. Rosser, who is now in Wellington, to urge upon the Government the unfortunate position in which these men were placed, and request that they be given free passages Home.

Labour Day: Mr. Partridge moved: "That in view of the unsatisfactory manner in which Labour Day was observed in Auckland by a large number of tradespeople and workers, the facts be placed before the various trades councils in the colony for the purpose of bringing hefore Parliament the necessity for the strict observance of the day." Mr.Hannigan moved an amendment, "That-no further action be taken in the matter." After a, brief discussion the motion was adopted, there being only two dissentients.
