SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION. The 40th anniversary of the Auckland Sunday School Union was celebrated in the Pitt street Methodist Churcli last evening by a tea, followed by a meeting. . Both functions were very .well patronised. Mr A. J. Entrican. the president of the union, was in the chair. The annual report showed thr.t the sum of £55 6/2 had been remitted to London in aid of the Centenary Fund being raised by the. London Sunday School Union, and that a large portion of the amount was contributed by the country schools. Thirteen schools had been admitted and one re-opened during the year,
while six had becti closed. The scholars' examination held on July Sth resulted in 404 candidates passing out of 45-5 who were examined.
The visitor, Mr C. H. Bottril, reported having visited S5 schools during the year. A further sum of £50 had been carried forward to the Sunday Schools Reserve Account. In the matter of trade the-union fully maintained its position. The volume of trade showed some increase, and in spite of larger expenses the amount of profit had not decreased.
Mr Entrican said he claimed the sympathy and help of all present in" the work ..of the Sunday School Union.. The, depot of the union was registered.some years aao under the Unclassified Societies Act, and ' people might be snre that the profits of the institution went to the interest and ad'rancenient of Sunday ■ schools. • • ' : *■" The financial statement showed that the year's receipts amounted to £5498 8/4.while the expenditure left a balance of £14 lti/4.
The depot expenses had absorbed £990 6/4, and goods £'2801 0/5. The assets, including
£14 ltf/4 cash in band, amounted to £7187 11/2. The election ot officers for the year rest! Itcd as follows:—-President, Mr A. J.

F. Battley. referred to the good qualities of that gentleman, who was for many years president of the uniou. A vote of- condolence to the bereaved members of the family was carried unanimously. Mtcr a short address oy the Rev. J. B.
RnVsell. M.A.. 8.D., the Rev. R. F. Macnicnl presented the prizes and certificates to the successful teachers.
