"TEN DAYS' BUTCHERY."
RUSSIAN GENERAL'S PICTURE. LOSES FIVE-SIXTHS OF HIS TROOPS. LONDON, October 18. A wounded Russian general of division, -who has arrived at Mukden, has said in an interview : " My troops were part of a force attacking rocky heights to the east. The front attack was of tn unheard-of character, and the losses were terrible. " When climbing almost vertical slopes in the face of a hail of bullets, of . six companies I lost fivesixths. " A company of the 23rd Siberian Regiment reached the summit and rushed on the Japanese defences. Its captain was lifted in the air on the points of several Japanese bayonets, and the rest perished before the companies following coula ascend. "This is the tenth day of such butchery. The Russo-Turkish war was a joke compared with it."
