GOLF.
The Gutta golf ball has passed. This year's Open Championship Tournament in England demonstrated this fact very effectively. The ascendency of the American ball is now probably fixed for all time. Last year's Championship was played with the rubbercore ball, after the professional players had suggested a boycott. This year's competition at Sandwich saw the disappearance of the ball that has made golfing history for the last sixty years. The rubber-oore ball was played with by all the professionals, even by those who, remarks the "Field," in days scarcely forgotten, professed to find in its retention that the true science of the game, apart from a long tee shot, was destroyed.
