THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.

STATEMENT/BY SIR JOSEPH WARD. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The exact position of the negotiations with Queensland in regard to this service was stated by 6k J. Ward yesterday evening, and it is apparent that the probabilities of arriving at a settlement are not particularly bright. The Minister stated that the colony's oiler was a subsidy of £20,000 a year, provided lhat Queensland agreed to stand out, and that the steamers came on to New Zealand without calling at Brisbane, lhe difficulty was to get -both Queensland and Canada to agree to the proposal, and he h*3d been in communication with influential political men in Australia, while strong representations had also been made to Canada. But Canada bad objected to fall in with the agreement so far, and negotiations were still proceeding. The 'Frisco service was a good one, but the G-ovemrnent was trying to get both for the colony.
