REMUERA DRAINAGE.

A SCHEME TO COST £15,575. The Remuera Road Board had under consideration last night the scheme for the drainage of Remuera prepared by Mr Mestayer. The scheme provided for live drainage areas, the Mt. Hobson drainage area not being included in his instructions, and there being no houses on areas 4 and 0. Of the remaining areas, four would drain into Hobson Bay directly, but it would not be possible to bring the sewage from any two or more of them to any one point for treatment without pumping, on account of the dividing ridges. It would be cheaper to treat each area separately, and therefore that method was the one he recommended. He recommended the septic tank system, the effluent running into the tidal waters rendering additional purification unnecessary. Rain-water would be disposed of in the gutters, and not through the sewage system, and consequently the sewers needed would be small, and be bad provided for the needs of the expected population. He had decided that it would be better to have a comprehensive scheme rather than a piecemeal policy, and he had come to the conclusion that it would be inadvisable to adopt a singlehouse system because it would have to be abandoned in the long run. The only area suitable for special treatment was No. 1, where 8 out of tiie 13 houses could be led to a small tank at the head of a branch of the main creek, and the rei mainder to another. The population ho had provided for was 1500 in No. 1 4500. in No. 2, 350 in No. 2a, and 7000 in No. 3. He advised provision for but three times the present population at present, and therefore provided for Gin. pipe sewers. The greatest need of drainage was in No. 5, where the drainage was inland. He had provided for a population up to 10,000, and the cost wouki be: No. 1 area, £1165; No. 2. £4220: No. 2a. £470; No. 3, £4370; and No. f>, £5350, making a total of £15,575 altogether. This included all the sewers shown on the plan (excepting along the Great South Road), the tanks, outfalls into creek, £150 for the straightening and clearing the creek channels to half-tide mark, £25 for well in No. 5 area, and 10 per cent, for engineering, legal expenses, and contingencies. It did not. however, include cost of land to be acquired. The whole scheme was deferred till next meeting to enable members to properly consider it.
