A PERILOUS EXPERIENCE.

RESCUED FROM A WELL,

Mrs Roto. Massey, a Pakuranga lady, was the victim of a most unpleasant experience on Friday afternoon last. It appears that an outhouse having caught fire, Mrs Massey, who is an elderly lady ran to the well to get some water to extinguish the fire, and in doing so tripped and fell head-foremost into the well, where she remained fast, with her head beneath the water, which was within two or three feet of the surface. Mr Massey, who is also well advanced in years, went to her assistance, but was unable to extricate his wife from her perilous position, all he could do being to hold her so that she would not sink deeper, and to call for further assistance. Lucidly Mr T. W. Brown, of Mi. Eden, happened to be passing, and came with all speed to their aid. Mr Brown managed, by dint of great exertions, to raise Mrs Massey to the surface. To all appearances the unfortunate lady had succumbed when she vas taken out of the well, but before Dr. Bewes, who had been summoned, could arrive, the neighbours had restored her to consciousness, although she was unable to speak for some time. On inquiry, Dr. Bewes states that, in spite of the serious nature of her accident, Mrs Massey has very nearly recovered from the effects, although her face has been badly scratched in the fall or the efforts of the rescuers in getting her out of her dangerous situation.
