THE TIBETAN ACHIEVEMENT.
—-• - _ "-Russians envious but pacific. views of the german press. British Influence Assured. (Received 7.47 a_a.) LONDON, August 9. The Russian press views the arrival of tbe British expe.i won at Lhasa with illdisguised envy and regret. The St. Petersburg journal "Novosti" nevertheless recommends the strengthening of the Anglo-Russian understanding with regard to Tibet, with a view to establishing lost equilibrium, and preventing the development of the "yellow peril." The Berlin paper "Freundenblatt" says that Tibet is now within the sphere of British influence but the loose bond which exists between Tibet and China is likely to prevent the actual supremacy of Great Britain. The German newspapers generally declare that a new political era has now dawned, which is destined to close Tibet's half-open northern door and open that in the south.
