FIRE BRIGADE MAINTENANCE.
(By Telegraph,—Own Correspondent) WELLINGTON, this day. According to Mr Aitken, Mayor of Wellington, the local fire brigade -really cost in maintenance £2832 for the year' ending March 31 last. Asuming that figures quoted from another source showing the cost of brigades in other centra to be correct, Mr Aitken calculates it works out as follpwa:—Welhngtoa Borough (population 43,586), 35 pernuuv ent brigadesmen, cost per /head 1/3}; Auckland Borough (population 34,119), 31 permanent men," £ 2500, cost per head 1/s i; Christchureh Borough (population 17,537), 30 permanent men, £2000, cojt • per head 2/3; Dunedin Borough (popo-' la tion 24,886), 19 permanent' men, £1600, cost per head l/»—or exactly:, the same as Wellington. Mr Aitken says it is to be remembered that the local brigade has not an outside circle of suburban volunteer brigades to. as-' sist it. Auckland has in her surrounding boroughs six volunteer brigades, and could bring 100 men to fight a f >ftrt against our 35. Other two centres also had volunteer brigades. , --.•
