TRADES and LABOUR COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of this Council was held last evening, Mr K. Boyd in the chair. About 2o members were present. Chinese in the Transvaal.—A reply from the Town Clerk stated that the reason vhy the Mayor had not complied with the Trades Council's request that a public meeting should be called to pretest against the introduction of Chinese labour to the Transvaal that the policy was; a 1 rea. \y in operation, and *ny protest now would be Ineffective.—On the motion of Mr W. P. Black the executive committee was instructed to arrange an open-air meeting. Victorian Mining Strike.—A donation of £2 for the strike funds of the Victorian miners was forwarded by the Painters' Union. New Delegates.—The election of the following delegates from the Furniture Trades' Union was notified:—Messrs W. P. Black. F. Walfson, Morgan. Ward, Small, and Doodson. Arbitration Court.—Mr Rosser said he was requested by the Carpenters' Union to ask the Council to protetf against the decision of the Arbitration Court to take no disputes except breaches of awards during the present Auckland sitting that were not died before iJeeember 31st. He said that this decision would press .unfairly on many unions whose awards had expired.— Mr Black and other speakers strongly sapported Mr Rosser's appeal, the former suggesting that ti;e presiding judge of the Court should be relieved from Court of Appeal business so as to be able to devote more time to arbitration work. He stated that l.j months had elapsed since the Court last sat in Auckland.—lt was unanimously resolved, nn the motion of Mr T. Phillips. "That this Council strongly protests against the decision of the Court of Arbitration to ta_ke no disputes from the northern district filed prior to Dec-ember 31st last, and considers that if less time were taken in attending the Court of Appeal the work of the Arbitration Court would he rapidly overtaken."—lt was decided to forward a copy of this resolution to the Premier and Minister of Justice. The "Independent Labour Party."—Mr Black suggested that Mr Rosser. the Auckland delegate to the recent Colonial Labour Conference, should give' his report. He noticed an important decision to form a% independent Labour party, and thought this should be fully discussed.—lt was decided To call a special meeting next Wednesday ta discuss the whole report.
