FORMATION OF STREETS.

(To the Edl.'or.) Sir, —I notice that our city councillors are meditating extension, and expensive street formation. Some two or three years ago it was resolved to test different formations, say, of a dozen yards each in one of our principal streets, where the wear and tear would be uniform. However, that good, sensible resolution appears to be buried in oblivion. One of the spaces was to "be a trial of the American oil treatment for the laying of dust and consolidation of roads, as used for a thousand miles most successfully in California, In Auckland the repairing of streets is almost of as much importance as the formation thereof, but clearing the streets of loose road metal, and levelling the projecting stones, appears to be altogether beyond the brain power of the department.—l am, etc., AMICUS.
