(By Telegraph.—Press Association.
NAPIER, Sunday. The Tyser lin new steamer Niwaru, from London, via Auckland, struck on the rocks near the breakwater when coming in this evening. Captain Todd, marine superintendent of the Tyser line, has gone out to the vessel to ascertain the extent of the damage.
NAPIER, this day.
The Niwaru is supposed to have touched on a rock half a mile south-east of the Breakwater, on which rock there is twenty fact of water at low tide. She has been brought into harbour, and anchored under the lee of the Breakwater, where the cargo in No. 4 hold will be discharged. Until i,his is done it will be impossible to tell the extent of the damage, but the steamer is still making water. The cargo in No. 4 hold is consigned to Napier and Wellington.
LATER.
NAPIER, this day.
Some persons who were in the vicinity of the breakwater when the Niwaru was entering the harbour last evening state that the steamer came dangerously close to the breakwater. Blue lights were burned by the Harbourmaster, and the steamer veered off, being subsequently boarded by the pilot.
Owing to the rapid rate at which water rose in No. 4 hold it was deemed advisable to take the steamer close to the shore near the breakwater, and here she took the ground.
There is now four feet of water in the hold.
