FATAL ACCIDENT AT COROMANDEL.

COKOMANDEL, this day,

A sad accident occurred yesterday at Cashinore's Bush, Matawai, by whieli a young man named William Eecleston was killed. Deceased had a contract for felling and crosscutting timber, and. at the time of the accident waa engaged, in company with a man named Hoyle, placing - a lonjj log in position for crosscutting. While lie was so engaged the log slewed round and rolled over him, inflicting severe injuries. Deceased lingered for a while, but expired before medical aid could be procured. The body was conveyed to town to await an inquest. The sad occurrence has cast quite a gloom, over the town, as the deceased, who is about 2S years of age, was very popular. His parents and other relatives reside at Tiki. The mates of the unfortunate man made a stretcher in order to carry him for five miles over the ranges. Death, however, put an end to his sufferings while on the way. His leg and abdomen were crushed by the log. '

An inquest was held at the Star and Garter Hotel to-day before the Coroner (Mr Swindley) on the body of William Eecleston. Evidence was given by Dr. Cheeseman as to the extent of the injuries, and Mr H. Hoyle, who witnessed the accident. The jury returned a verdict of •'Accidental death."
