PONSONBY V. ARATAPU.
The football season was opened on Saturday, when the Ponsonby Club's senior fifteen played a match with a team from the Aratapu Club at Alexandra Park, in .the presence of a few hundred spectators. As is usual with such matches played right at the beginning of the season, the f.j-m shown was not of a high older. The game was, however, fairly interesting. 11: resolved itself into a struggle between the two sees of forwards, who showed some very fair form. In rhe first hall' the play was of au even nature, Aratapu being within au ace of scoring once or twice, while they forced their opponents two or throe times. For Pousoiiby Dunloy scored a try aud Francis kicked a tine goal from it. In the second spell Ponsonby had rather the best of the deal, and another try was scored by Meidrum, the game ending in Ponsonby's favour by 8 to nil. There was little or no combination among the backs, whose kicking and tackling were very fair. Ponsonby carried the seiuins, and the visitors were unable to give their backs chances to score.
