CHILDREN'S FESTIVITIES
PROPOSED DINNER IN QUEEN-
iSTREET
The sub-committee appointed, at Friday's meeting- of citizens to make recommendations on the details of a scheme for entertaining the children on Coronation Day met yesterday afternoon for the purpose of drawing ■jp recommendations to be placed before the meeting of teachers with the members of the committee tonight. After considering the difficulties of the uncertainty of the weather, and of securing a hall large en^ cugh to hold all the children, the committee decided to recommend to the meeting to-night. " That the children be entertained at a Coronation feast on June 26th, -at half-past ,twelve, in Queen - street, which for the purpose shall be coyI ered in with canvas from Wel-lesley-street to Victoria-street." It | was pointed out that by Coronation Day the paving of this portion of Queen-street would be completed, and that the smooth-surfaced street would be a good substitute for a dining- hall- The intention is to cover ,in the street from kerb to kerb, stop i all horse traffic and leave the footpaths only open for foot traffic. It was further resolved at the meeting, " That meetings of ladies be convened in the city and suburban districts to canvass for subscriptions, and to arrange for the iiecessary-he.lp in connection with the chiklren|B dinner;" also, " That arrangements be made for suitable entertainments for the children in the afternoon, and that an estimate of the*cost of procurins medals or other permanent memorials in the slnipe of cards be obtained."
