ONEHUNGA.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting: of the Onchunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. A. Sutherland), in the ofiair, and Crs Colledg-e, Stoupe, HIH, Rishworth, Itowe, Shaldrick. Mr-Leod, Kelsall, and Vause Tram Lines.—Messrs J. G. White and Co. wrote intimating that in a few weeks the rails to construct the Tramway Company's tracks through Epsom and Onehnnga from Newmarket to Onehunga would arrive, and as operations for laying would begin shortly they requested permission to lay the rails along the sides of the streets in question, as in the city streets, they assuming- all responsibility for accidents or damage through so placing- the rails.—The Mayor moved that the letter be referred to the Council in co.mmittee. He thought there was no urgency in the matter, as weeks would elapse before the rails would be in Onehunga.— Cr. Kelsall seconded the resolution,which •was carried.

Blue Metal.—'Messrs H. H. Bray wrote offering to supply the Council with about GO yards of broken blue metal at 6/G per yard at their quarry, or 8/ per yard delivered as required.—On motion of Crs. Shaldrick and Stoupe the offer of S/ for delivery was accepted.

Defective Meter.—Mr S. J. Brookfield, Secretary of the Onehun.sra Public School Committee, wrote requesting- that, in lieu of charging- the school water supply by meter, it be charged on an average of the consumption of past quarters, say twelve months.—ln answer to the Mayor, the Town Clerk snid the school water me'er was out of order, and had been for eisrht years.—The Mayor moved, seconded by Cr. Shaldriek. th-#L the Eiatter be referred to the Council to consider and report upon. — Cr. S^oupe considered that the Council should supply the school with water free of charge. He moved accordingly, which after discussion was lost, and "the original motion carried.

Financial Statement.—The Town Clerk made the usual fortnightly financial statement, after which accounts amountinsr to £62 6/11 were passed for payment.

.Water Consumption.—The turncock reported that during the past fortnight' 1.153.000 gallons of water had been pumped fo the reservoir. Petition.—Cr. Rishworth presented a r>etition from several ratepayers of Norman's Hill requesting that a footpath be made in Grey-street towards TSTorman's Hill Road. In suport of the motion he said the work had been passed two years ago.and he hoped the Council would deal with such a necessary work at once. He moved that the work be proceeded with at onc«.—Cr. Shaldriek seconded the resolution, which was carried.

Sanitary.—The Council in committee recommended that having considered the special report of Mr P. Brown, Sanitary

Inspector, a special order to amend bylav/ .\o. 10 be made.—This was agreed to, and Monday, the 19th inst., fixed for the meeting. . . < Mangere Bridge.—Or. Shaldrick intimated that Mr E. Hall, Secretary of the Mangere Road Board, in "-company witn a Government engineer, had waited upon him, and stated they proposed on the following day making an examination ol the Mangere Bridge and assessing any damage done through the s.s. Kanieri coming in collision with it.—The Mayor moved that Cr. Rowe represent the Council.—Or. Shaldrick seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Infectious Diseases.—Dr. R. H, Makgill. District Health Officer, wrote forwarding a copy of resolutions re infectious disease hospital passed at a meeting- of representatives of local bodies on the 2Sth ult., and requesting that the same be adopted by the Council. A telegram was also received on the same subject.—The Mayor, In moving that the letter and telegram be referred to the Council-in committee, remarked that if the local bodies were as long- selecting a suitable site for the hospital as another body was for the abattoirs, time would elapse before they would be called upon to do anything.—ln answer to Cr. A Complaint.—Discussion took place on the necessity of having the Council office open during stated hours. The mutter was referred to the Council in committee to report upon at next meeting.

Streets! Committee.-/ The Streets Committee recommended that the crown of the arch of Mount Roskill Road be taken to form a footpath in that road from Sy-monds-street to Pah Road, also that the services of the best men available J)e obtained for street work, and that tne repairs to Spring and Alfred streets be placed upon the list of works to be done. —The recommendations we're adopted.

Disputed Account.—The Council in committee reported having considered a claim oy the Fire Brigade for a refund of £ii 10/, alleged to have been paid by them towards the cost of purchasing a hose reei. They recommended that the claim be not entertained, as the vouchers in the Council showed that the whole Sum of £15 had been paid out of the Council's funds.—Adopted.

_ Fire Brigade.—Captain Hill reported that a Fire Brigade had been formed, and asked that each man be supplied with boots.—The request was granted.

Cemetery.—A committee consisting of the Mayor and Crs. Rishworth and Rowe was appointed to get plans and specifications for the erection of a .mortuary chapel at Waikaraka, Onehunga.1
