NEWMARKET RATING
At the ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Boroxigh Council last evening according to notice the Mayor moved that the Council consider the question of increasing the rates. The Mayor said it .was quite evident that they would have to increase the rates at an early date, and he thought they should consider the matter that night. He thought they would see that "it whs impossible to keep up-to-date with the present rate.
The Town Clerk said the valuations of'the borough had increased during the year by £2SG, and if an additional penny was added to the rates the income would be increased by £122 0/4.
The Mayor said this increase would not be nearly sufficient. lie proposed: "That the rates be increased by 4d. in the pound." This, he explained, with tire reduction in the special rate, would mean an increase- of 2d in the pound. There would undoubtedly have to be another increase for drainage. They should remember that it was expected that the new tramways would save the people of Newmarket some £000 in fares.
