CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

Mr A. W. Rutherford, one of the candidates for the Ashley seat, addressed a meeting- of electors at Cheviot on Saturday. Mr Rutherford, although a member of a family of the Amuri "wool kings," who are by tradition opposed to progressive legislation, has long been suspected of leanings towards Liberalism. His speech on Saturday confirmed this impression. He said that although lie did not intend to be a '"come-in-to-heel" follower of Mr Seddon, neither did he contemplate being a "left-winger," or anything of that sort. He would give Mr Seddon a good solid supportwithout being a subservient creature. He had always been a Liberal, and intended to remain one to the end of his life.

Trooper Way, of the Eighth Contingent, whose death in announced, is the son of Mr Way, a well-known business man of Christchurch, and grandson of Mr Harman, of the firm of Harman and Stevens.

The executive of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, replying to the members of the Employers' Association, who objected to the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, sarcastically invites them to petition Parliament to repeal it.

Mr C. A. C. Hardy, the. sitting member, announces his intention of contesting the Selwyn seat at the general election.

The slow fires in the new destructor were lighted some days ago, and it. is anticipated that the destructor will be working at full strength in about a fortnight. Mr Garrett, the representative of Meldrum Bros., contractors, has just returned from Sydney, where he journeyed to make arrangements for the erection there of a similar destructor. He is much pleased .with the omsTPss made with the Christchurch destructor.
