GREY LYNN.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —A resident of Grey i..._..i_ writ' ing in your issue of the 9th inst., is evidently afflicted with a very severe attack of "Cacoethes scribendi," and has a shot at .the venturesome bicyclist who dares to ride on the footpath. Well, I suppose this is an offence, according xo some, but perhaps not any worse than the perambulator nuisance in our crowded thoroughfares; and what a dirty borough Grey Lynn is, according to "Resident." I don't think there is any jus. tification for such a charge, as I happen to be another resident in the borough, and am sure that Grey Lynn will compare favourably with any other borough in the Provincial district, thanks to the action of'our Borough Council in providing means for the removal of refuse. And I venture to say that when the drainage work is completed, Grey Lynn will be, from a sanitary point of Anew, second to none. "Besident" surely must be suffering from a disordered liver to write in such a strain; but, while defending the borough against the charges, I do think that we residents have a real grievance, and I take this opportunity to have a tilt at the Council re the condition of our "roads".and paths. I venture to say that tbe borough can boast of more new and up-to-date houses than any other place in tbe provincial district; but it is next to impossible to get a loaded dray to or from the majority of them, and year after year passes, and nothing whatever is done to them. They are still in a state of nature, andmake one fancy that we are 50 or 100 miles up-country instead of two miles from tbe G.P.O. Surely the Council can promulgate some scheme by which an improvement in respect to our roads can be effected. —I am, etc.,

W. S. SMITH.
