THE DAIRY INDUSTRY

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

TAUEANGA, this day,

A very largely attended meeting of farmers was held here on Saturday to discuss a project for establishing the butter industry here on a large scale. The proposal, which was favourably entertained, is to give combined support to one big factory, with several outlying creameries. Representatives of McEwan Company, of Wellington, are expected to arrive here this week to discuss matters with the settlers. They have offered to build a factory and creameries on a three years' guarantee, the settlers at the end of that time to be at liberty to buy the company out at valuation, and run on co-operative lines. At tbe meeting on Saturday some of the settlers said they ougßt to be able to get a similar offer from Auckland, and a few others favoured starting a co-operative concern right away. Delegates were appointed to canvass the whole district and meet Mr. MeEwan's representative on arrival. From information so far received it appears that, if one central factory is established if or Tepuna, Otnmoetai. Tauranga, Ye Puke, Pohgakawa and Maketu, there should be about 1800 cows available in the first season, and probably a large increase in the second j'ear.
