ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

_—♦_ (By CaDie.—Press Association.— j\ (Copyright) i,' A]

THE GERMAN

EXPEDITION.

(Received 9.2G a.m.)

LONDON, April 21

News has been received that the German Antarctic' exploring vessel Gauss arrived at Kerguelen Island, in the Southern Ocean, on January 2nd, from the South Polar regions.

[This is the third of the scientific expeditions which have been engaged in prospecting the mysterious icy regions of Antarctica during the past spring and summer. A cable message a few days ago stated that the Swedish expedition under Dr. Otto Nordenskjold had arrived at Terra del Fuego, South America, from the South. The British expedition, in the auxiliary screw barque Discovery, under Captain' Scott, R.N., which left Lyttelton last year, is now in the Antarctic regions, but may be expected to be heard from before long. The German expedition in the Gauss is under the command of. Dr.. Eric yon Drygalsld. who is supported by a competent scientific staff. . The Gauss, like the Discovery, was specially built for ice work, and fully equipped for scientific observations, especially magnetic. She sailed from Europe in August last, and after proceeding to Kerguelen Mand, where a base of operations was establish-saT.-dailed southward in order to ■establish a winter station in Antarctica. No doubt both the Discovery and the Gauss have left parties of explorers beyond the ice barrier on the mainland of the Polar regions, to continue their investigations.}
