THE FEDERAL TARIFF

NEW ZEALAND TIMBER

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent)

WELLINGTON, this day.

I have interviewed the Commis^ sioner of Customs regarding an Auckland telegram stating that the Collector of Customs is advised that Cabinet has issued instructions to shippers of dutiable timber that they must give previous notice ..to the Customs for inspection, that it is concluded the Government does not intend to remove the export duty on kauri and kahikatea, with an editorial footnote added by the "Times" that the Government has not yet considered revisions of the export duty on. timber, the matter having been postponed until the final passing of the Federal Customs Tariff Bill, and it is almost certain the duty will be removed. The Hon. C. H. Mills says the export duty on timber was Imposed for the purpose of conserving the timber interest of this colony, and finding employment for men dependent upon that class of work. The only matter now under consideration of the\ Commissioner of Customs is what shall be the maximum size of flitches to be exported free of duty.
