AMERICAN INTERESTS PARAMOUNT.

(Received 5.50 a.m.)

LONDON, April 20

The Morgens Company declares that American interests will dominate the shipping amalgamation, which makes the United States the real rulers of the mercantile marine. Mr. Pierpont Morgan is the manager of the syndicate.

The Union Company's steamer Waikare arrived from Sydney yesterday eveningl after a smart passage across. This is not the fastest trip the "Waikare has made between the two ports, but nevertheless is a creditable performance, and enabled the steamer to land her passengers last night, and to commence discharge of cargo at the wharf early this morning. The passenger list of the Waikare was a very large one, representing 110 persons in both classes, the majority of whom leave the vessel at Auckland. The steamer's cargo includes transhipments from London, China, Japan and Calcutta.

A boy named James, whose parents reside in Alexandra-street, had a narrow escape from drowning- on Saturday afternoon. He was fishing at the Railway Wharf, when by some means he fell into the harbour. Some people noticing the accident called out to some gentlemen who were passing in one of Henderson's oil launches. The occupants, Messrs. McCullough, Fraaer and Arthur, promptly went to the lad's assistance. They arrived just in time to save him, as he was unconscious. The boy was taken to an adjoining shed, and rubbed until he came round again.

We are asked to draw the attention of Liedertafel members to a notice of a special practice to-night.

Miss Davidson lectured last evening to a full audience in the Theosophical Society's Hall, taking as her subject the motto of the French Eevolution, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity." Miss Davidson dealt fully with the three divisions of her subject, coming finally to the conclusion that liberty and equality of opportunity could only be attained when fraternity towards all had become a living factor in the life of each. An interesting discussion followed.
