WEST END ROWING CLUB.

The West End Rowing Club's trial fours for Vice-President Kohn's handsome shield were held on Saturday afternoon. Although the weather was dull-looking, the water was ideal for rowing, and some good racing* resulted. There was a fair attendance, and during the afternoon the Hon. T. Thompson and Mr. .Kohn Were present. A ladies' committee provided afternoon tea. Mr. R. R. Dowuen acted" |as starter, and Mr. Dunlop as judge. In the first round there were three races. The following teams, which had. secured first place in their respective heats, took part in the final: (1) W. A. Graham (stroke), P. Gutry, A. Watson, P. M. Short t and S. Weston (cox); (2) W. Cossar (stroke), R. ,_,'. Carder, H. English, G. Dickinson and S. Buck (cox); (3) H. Cossar (stroke), 0. Carlaw, P. Weston, P. Cossar and Lynn Weston (cox). Prom the start the pace was fast, and H. Cossar's crew, rowing with a crev*{ stroked by W. Cossar, outstripped the latter, and at three-quarters of the journey had a good lead. Graham's crew, however, in the inside running, were coming strongly, and secured first place by a short' lead. They have the honour of being the first crew to have their names engraved on the handsome club shield. They also win outright small silver shields, on which are engraved their names.
