THE NINTH CONTINGENT.
A SPLENDID RESPONSE
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, Monday.
The announcement that the ImperiaJ Government had expressed its desire for a Ninth Contingent of 1000 men caused considerable excitement in the city to-day. The Premier consulted members of Parliament by telegram. A sufficient number of replies in the affirmative having been received, the Premier fell, justified in cabling- to the Secretai'y of State that the request would be complied with. The officers of the Defence Department will at once take measures for recruiting. This work is made easieii by the fact that the Government has received 4000 offers for places in the Eighth Contingent, and the selection of the Ninth will be made from the 3000 who are still in reserve. A greater proportion of the contingent will be chosen from the country districts than in the case of the other recent enrolments. >
