I Touching1 on prison matters, the Hon. ilr Wise, Attorney-General of I New South Wales, in the course of an interview with a representative of j the Canterbury "Press," mentioned i that he had met the Hon. Jas. McGovvan, Minister of Justice, at Waiotapu, in the Rotorua district, and saw the prisoners at work on the plantations there. He considers the experiment a good one, and that it ought to be watched with interest. "One system we have in New South Wales," continued Mr Wise, "and which has been introduced elsewhere, which New Zealand . has not. I allude to regular physical drill for prisoners; a system which has given most advantageous results. When a prisoner is discharged we. now send him out well set up and walking something like a soldier, instead of with the gait that a policeman would at once reeog-nise as that of a man who had served a sentence in gaol. The effect of the . drill has been wonderfully good; in fact, I consider it has been the making of some of the younger men, as~~inducing largely to their general health, and when a man is healthy.he is a long way on the road to reform, even if he has fallen into crime. The men who drill together, learn obedience and to like the company of their fellowmen —two traits quite opposite to those of the criminal who is opposed to order and is secretive and fond of isolation. ,1 feel sure that'if anyone came to New South Wales and inspected our prison drill they would be well satisfied with the results. I would like to remark here that I think it a great pity that there is not more interchange of ideas amongst the public men of New Zealand and Australia, for good would certainly result from ' such interchange."
