SPEECH BY AIR BARTON AT MAITLAND.
SYDNEY, Thursday.
Mr Barton addressed a large gathering of his constituents at Maitl-und to-night. He reviewed the work of the session, and said a record legislation had been passed eonsd-vering the difficulties of the new Goveitnment under the new Constitution, and the active organised Opposition. He claimed that the arrange-; ment with the shipping companies over the ships' stores trouble was an honourable compromise, and no back down by the Government. He urged the value of New Guinea to the Com-mor-wealtb". and the necessity of opposing any weakening of British influence in the New Hebrides. He reviewed the tariff and its effects at considerable length. He had a cordial reception.
