The "Post," in an article on the proposals made by 'the Oceanic Company to the Australian Governments, say 3 this colony is far too British in character and feeling to be browbeaten into* granting Messrs. Spreekels their own terms and assisting in fostering1 an American shipping and trading monopoly. The article proceeds to argue the question from an Australian point of view, and declares that the Spreckels proposals are likely to dnjure the commercial marine ot the Australasian colonies. EXODUS OF AUSTRIAN'S. Five Austrians from Auckland gttrafields have booked passages by the Eiimutaka for Monte Video to-mor-row. VISIT OF COLONEL PATEESON. Colonel Paiterson, wSib served in South Africa with the Queensland contingent, and who is credited with being the first of the relieving column to enter Ladysmith, Is now in Wellington. SUB-INSPEOTOE WILSON. ■ Sub-Inspector Wilson, of the Wellington police, has gone *to Auckland on a month's holiday. N.Z. EIFLE ASSOCIATION. The programme of the N.Z. Eifle Association's annual meeting, which is to commence at Txrentlxam on the 27th prox., has been prepared, and will be issued as soon as 'the Minister for Defence has approved. It is proposed to give liberal prizes, to reduce the entrance fees, and to supply ammunition free of charge. OFFICIAL NOTES. The Inspector of Prisons has left for Wanganui in order to; inquire into the circumstances connected with the escape of prisoners. The Minister of Lands, after a hurried visit to the offices in his department yesterday afternoon, left for Nelson, whence it is understood he will travel overland to-Oamaru. Messrs. W. Haselden, S.M^J and Mr .77 W. Poynton, Public Trustee, will sit as Commissioners utext week to hear the allegations of ill-treatment made against a WfelSngiton gao] warder by the prisoaex Wilson.
