MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, ETC.

A concert was given in St. Mary's Parish Hall, Parnell, last evening, in aid of the Women's Guild. The hall was well filled, and a. capital programme was gone through, most of the items being encored. Mr Chambers sang "The Storm Fiend," and "Gipsy John," being- doubly encored for the latter item. Miss Annie Taylor delighted the audience with her rendering of "A Summer Night," aud Sullivan's "Guinevere." Hcrr Kreutzer contributed two violin solos, and Miss Batger gave two piano items, both performers being encored. Miss Mitchell was twice encored for her rendering of "The Jewel of Asia," with guitar accompaniment. Plantation songs were rendered by Miss White, and Messrs D'Arcy, Anderson, Garland, and Upfil, both being "warmly encored. Miss Colegrovc played the accompaniments.

At the Ponsonby Wesleyan schoolroom on Wednesday evening, the Rev. W. Ready delivered a lecture on his recent trip to Queensland, whither he went to attend the Australasian Conference. After briefly outlining the principal business of the conference, and describing some of the notable figures at that assembly, the lecturer went on to describe a visit he made to the large sugar plantation at Bundaberg. Reference was also made to the excellent-electric tramway service in Brisbane, and Mr Ready expressed the hope that the proposed service in Auckland would be equally as good. The lecturer was given a very attentive hearing by the large attendance present, and at the close of his lecture was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Vocal and instrumental items were rendered during the evening by Miss Cordes and Messrs Norgrove, Butler, and Peak.

On Wednesday last, at the Costley Home, an entertainment of unusual interest was given to the inmates by a party of friends from the city. The programme was arrauged with much taste by Miss E. A. Butler, A.M., who, with Miss Lovatt, acted as accompanist. Mr W. Maxwell acted as chairman. The following programme was listened to with great delight by .the old folks:—Trio, Miss Butler? Messrs Jenkins and Hutt; song, Mr Whitaker; duet (piano), Misses Wood and Potter; harp selection (encored), MiHeath; song (encored), Miss Reynolds; violin solo, Mr Jenkins; recitation (encored), Miss Bullen; piano solo, Miss Heath; song (inmate), Mrs Bell; song, Mr Ashworth. A pleasant break was here made, when coffee was served and social intercourse indulged in. Trio, Miss Butler, Messrs Jenkins and Hutt; song (encored), Mrs Moss; recitation, Miss Bullen; harp and mouth organ selection (encored), Mr Heath; duet (encored), Mrs Mill and Miss Reynolds; violin solo, Mr Jenkins. Closing the entertainment Mr W. Maxwell, in a few well-chosen words, thanked those present for their good attention. He also proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, which was seconded by Mr Moss, who added complimentary remarks to all who were good enough to contribute to the evening's enjoyment.
