WAIHI.

THE MINING OUTLOOK,

(From Our Own Correspondeat.)

It may be said with full justification that the mining outlook in Waihi has never been so laden with well-col-oured prospects of a progressive future as it is at the present time. It is now simply a question of ways and means of development, and not of proving theoretically the existence of an unknown quantity. In the Waihi Company's mine itself we have the famous Martha, the Welcome, and. Welcome No, 2, the Magazine, Regina, Albert, Prince, Princess Royal, Em-, press, Emily, Victoria, Empire, andj the Dnke of York lodes, the latter: being the latest discovered lode, and other lodes are coming to light in the deeper levels of this wonderful mine. To the north-east of the Waihi we have the Grand Junction, with its already proved larg-e body of ore, and its close proximity to the strike of the Empire lode, coming in from tihe Waihi Company's property, and backed up by a first class plant, favourable surface sites, and an . able maaagfiment. These recent developments? have added to the credit of Waiki'av future in no small measure. Tfae Extended comes next with its shaft almost finished ready to drive far the reef. If the Martha lode be cut here, then the Pride of Waihi is in a good position, while the Waihi Consolidated, already possessing the advantages of a good plant, and central shaft and levels, etc., should cut the Empire lode, if it lives through the junction property. In the Martha Hill claim, on the footwall side of the Martha lode, no less than. 18 leaders have been cut, and it has been a matter of much speculation why no deep prospecting has been done on the footwall of the Waihi Company's famous lode. To the south east is the Union-Waihi Company, holding Winner, Rosemont, Union, Silverton, and Amaranth lodes, and embracing the old Silverton property with a first-class plant and battery. To the east of this lies the Waihi Gold Reefs Syndicate's property, better known as the Waihi Gladstone. Then further south may be seen the Waihi President, adjoining the Gladstone, with an immense reef, which has already been prospected on. To the west and south of Waihi township the Consols property possesses great advantages, besides having a shaft sunk, a boring machine doing good work at 450 feet, and a winze in the level on the other side of the Martha Hill, skirting in its area the Extended, Waihi, West, and South properties. Hei'e again is the Grand Junction west section-with a shaft of over 400 feet, sinking in excellent country, at no great distance from the lode already cut in the old west property. The Waihi South is also generally

admitted to be a first-class claim, Jacking only the means to bring it into a place of importance. Deep sinking is undoubtedly the. required medium for success in this mine. The operations carried on by the Grand Junction and other companies have conclusively demonstrated that once deep level works are systematically undertaken the Waihi district will not then be dependent upon the results of one company.
