POLICE COURT.
THIS DAY
(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.) r>runkenness.— For this offence a diminutive Atficaii named Andrew Jacob was convicted, and on promising to leave the town forthwith he was ordered to come up for .sentence when called upon. Frank Roberts was sentenced to two months' hard labour and two first offenders were convicted and discharged. "Language."—James Thompson was convicted of being- drunk and using obscene language, and was fined 10/ or 48 hours on the first charge, and sentenced to 14 days' hard labour on the second. Assault.—A young man named John Gunson pleaded not guilty to assaulting a native named Kerei Kerena, and damaging his coat. The evidence of the informant and another native showed that accused had committed an unprovoked assault, tearing the informant's coat beyond all hope of 'mending. His Warship inflicted a fine of £4, of which £2 was to be paid to the informant for a new coat, in default, one month's hard labour.
Remanded. —A woman named Emily Martinson was charged with having used indecent language to the postmistress at Wavroauku. Sub-Inspec-tor Mitchell asked for a remand to Helensville, but this was opposed by defendant's counsel, Mr Lundon, who wished the case to be dealt with by a magistrate. Eventually His Worship adjourned the casp, to be heard at Auckland next Wednesday.
