UNFURLING THE FLAG.
NEWTON EAST SCHOOL.
The ceremonies in connection with the unfurling of the flag at the Newton East School took place this afternoon. The proceedings opened with prayer by Rev. Gray Dixon. The Chairman (Mr John Eosser) congratulated the head master and.' committee on the success which had Attended their efforts. Lieut.-Col. White addressed a few words to the children, urging them ever to regard the good old flag as an emblem of righteousness, and to endeavour to live upright and worthy lives. He then unfurled the flag, while the children, under the leadership of Mr Brown, sang "God Save the King," and the. cadet corps from Napier-street School presented arms. Addresses were also given by Mr Richard Monk and Mr George Fbwlds, M.H.R. Hulse's Brass Band assisted with the singing, and also rendered two overtures during the afternoon, and the school children, who had been arranged beforehand, sang the usual patriotic songs at intervals. Their singing reflected credit on their trainer, Mr Brown. An apology was read from Mr David Goldie, ex-Mayor, expressing his regret at not being able to attend. The proceedings closed with the National Anthem.
