THE G. M. REED MEMORIAL
At the Albert Park this afternoon the driuking- fountain erected to the memory of the late George Mc.Cullough Reed, journalist, was formally handed over to the citizens by Mr D. Goldie, ex-Mayor. A number of ladies and gentlemen were present, including several members of the Memorial Committee. In handing over the fountain Mr Goldie said they were met to do honour to one who upheld the truth, and ono who was ever ready to use his pen on behalf oE the temperance cause. Miss Mitchell, a little daughter of Mr Mitchell ,architect, then drew the first water from the fountain. Mr Goldie then formally handed over the fountain to the Mayor, .Dr. Campbell, who, in accepting the giftto the citizens, said that the late Mr G. M. Reed was a man of whom he had the greatest esteem and regard. Mr W. Berry then made a few remarks in praise of the character of the deceased journalist, and the proceedings closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The statue of the Fisher Girl surmounting the fountain is the gift of Mr W. Parkinson, stone mason.
