CUSTOMS RETURNS.
The Customs returns for the month of May have been completed by the Department. The exports of minerals and of butter and cheese all show very large increases, as compared with May of last year. The gold exports totalled 18,487 ozs., valued at £70,880. an increase of 7,420 ozs., and in value of £31,612. Silver exports were 36,354 ozs, valued at £4029. an increase of 11,288 ozs., and, of £1122. The butter exported amounted to 735 cwts, valued at £3322, as against- 196, valued at £962, an increase of' 539 cwts, and in value of £2300; cheese, 1353 cwts. value £2712, against 433 cwts., value £937, an increase of 920 cwts. valued at £1775. Customs duties decreased the total being- £38,305 11/10, against £49,543 2/5. Beer duty showed a slight increase, .-61452 8/1, against £1302 9/6. No frozen meat, was sent out during May of this year, 4795 cwts having been exported during the month last ■year. .
