Drunkenness.—For this offence John Melvin Mackenzie was fined 5/ or 24 hours' hard labour, and Mary Eiley 10/ or 48 hours. Two first offenders were convicted and discharged.
By-law Cases. —For driving after dark without lights Andrew Lyall, Michael Houlihan, Walter Young and "William Moone were each fined 5/ and costs. A youth named Charles Graydon was fined. 10/ and costs (7/) for playing football in a public street to the annoyance of passers-by.
Francis x\. White, charged with allowing1 two cows to stray in the Domain Drive, was convicted and discharged.
Charge of Street Betting.—Robert Blaikie, bookmaker, and Arthur Hodgson, his.clerk, were jointly charged with frequenting Queen-street for the purpose of betting. Accused pleaded not gpuilty and were defended by Mr Reed. Constables Burke and Davis, and Detectives Herbert and Mcllveney gave evidence for the prosecution, Hodgson deposed for the defence, that he met Blaikie in Queen-street and asked him for the amount of a fire insurance premium which was then flue. Both "he and Blaikie denied that there had been any betting on the occasion referred to. His Worship said he regarded the case as one of suspicion only. The case for the prdsecution was met by a plausible explanation, and must be dismissed.
W. Lyons pleaded not guilty to a like charge, and called a witness to depose that he (witness) was merely handing money to the defendant in payment of a bet made at Ellerslie racecourse a clay or so before. His Worship held that the settlement of a bet previously made on the racecourse was not street -betting and dismissed the information. (Proceeding.)
