THE WAIHI BEACH ACCIDENT.
WAIHI, this day.
With reference to tbe accident at Waihi Beach on Sunday, it appears Gibbons was engaged dynamiting in the sea off the Heads, when a charge suddenly burst in his right hand, and the hand and wrist were terribly mutilated. He was engaged watching tbe movements of a stingaree, forgetting the fuse was alight. He bore up pluckily, axid mounting a horse rode for Tanner's Hotel. In the meantime his companion hastened to Waihi for Dr. Guiness. After binding the wounded hand Mrs Tanner drove Gibbons into Waihi, where, after a brief examination, the Doctor found it necessary to amputate the hand above the wrist. In addition to the injury to his band Gibbons received a severe puncture in the left leg. The Doctor reports that the sufferer is doing as well as can be expected.
