THE DUKE AND DUCHESS IN SYDNEY.

(By Cable.—Press Association.—

SYDNEY, May 31

The principal function to-day was the laying- of the memorial stone of the Queen Victoria pavilion, at the Prince Alfred Memorial Hospital, founded in 1873. In ISBI the present Duke of York was the first to sign the visitors' book, when the hospital was practically completed. Owing to the generosity of the public, the accommodation at the hospital has been increased by a new building', of which the foundation stone was laid to-day. The committee decided to commemorate the. late Queen by calling' the buildingl the Queen Victoria Pavilion.

The Duke, replying- to an address, said it was with deep satisfaction that the Duchess and himself took part in the ceremony. He liked to hope that their presence might conduce, in a small degree,-to the advancement of the splendid work which had already been accomplished by the hospital. He was proud to think that whether ho turned to its past history, or looked forward into the future, there was a close association with the institution and his family. It had found its birth in the popular enthusiasm over the recovery oi the Duke of Edinburgh from an attack on his life, and in the title of the new building' it was identified with the imperishable memory of our late and dearly-loved Sovereign. He doubted whether any more fitting' memorial could have been chosen, for her sympathy with the sufferer was an all-pervading- element of the noble character of Victoria, who was first the patron, and with whose name the hospital would be associated for all time.
