THE INDEMNITY SETTLED.

The Emperor has issued an edict announcing that China agrees to the indemnity as previously cabled and with nn interest rate of 4 per cent. He asks to be allowed to pay the indemnity in tO instead of 30 years.
Thirteen thousand Chinese troops will occupy Chili province. General Waldersee, in a letter to Li Hung" Chang, says if: murder is prevented and the inhabitants protected, the Allies will evacuate Paotingfu and Pekin. He adds that China ia now afforded an opportunity of showing her ability to stand alone, and. io win the Allies' respect.
The Kaiser restricts the German forces in China to a mixed garrison brigade, and has dissolved the headquarters' staff.
It is improbable that the Allies will appoint a general-in-chief in succession to General VValdersee.
