INCIDENTS.
It appears that the children who lost their lives in the fire, and Miss Wallace, the fourth victim, had all been out that evening at the Gaiety Company's performance.
Mrs Moss Davis and her daughters were present, at the fire and brought pillows and blankets to make the sufferers as comfortable as possible under the circumstances.
When the man went to the. hotel yesterday to arrange for the new fire escapes, Miss Meyers remarked to him that there was no need of such things in a brick building, as they could always escape by the big staircase. She little guessed what a deathtrap it was going- to prove a few hours later.
The news of the destruction of the hotel was telephoned to Wellington at 2 o'clock this morning by Mr Moss Davis, who rang irp Mr Donne, chief of the Tourist Department, and informed him that the hotel reserved for the Royal suit? had been burned down. Mr Donne left Wellington at 7 this morning for Auckland.
