THIS DAY.
This morning the defence was. heard in the charge against Sainsbury of indecently assaulting a Maori woman at Waiharera. Mr J. R. Reed, for.the defence, contended that the case was a trumped up one, concocted by Mini Karaka and her friends. The accused ■ovive evidence on his own behalf, and strongly denied that he had made any improper overtures or indecently assaulted the woman. The natives owed him a considerable sum of money for goods obtained at his store and he had been pressing them for it prior to this complaint being laid. He visited the woman's house on the evening in question, stayed a good while there talking, and one of the women played an accordeon for.some time. During his visit he did not in any way assault the woman Mini.
