BOARD OF EDUCATION.

! The monthly meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held this morning, there heir.- presenl Messrs J. L. Bagnall (Chairman), S. Lainbe, .1. Mnir, J. Blades, A. McKenzie, P.. Selection of Teachers.—The leaeners' Selection Committee reported:— Your Committee have examined the applications (thirty-eight) i-wcived in answer to advertisement for the aeadmastership 01 the Tauranga bchool, and have submitted to the School Committee the names and qualifications of the eleven candidates tindernamed: Messrs C. A. Beniadeni, .1. Elliott, J. S. Colhoun, J. T. G. Cox. J. Dean, F. Jameson, J. W. Rennick, J. Brook. W. Collins, A. J. C. Hal), and J. L. Innes. Your Committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board: — Vlr W J. Cahill to be teacher of Mamiu school, Mr C. E. O'lL Tobin to be teacher of Waimamaku Valley chool, Mr W. F. Dean to be teacher of Tangaihi school. Miss M. J. Elliott to be teacher of Tara Road school. Miss A. B. Frascr to be teacher of Waikare "aided" school, Miss E. G. Asliby to be teacher of Komata school, Mr H. J. Jones to be assistant master Northeote school. Miss T. M. Cooper to be third assistant Northeote school, Mrs Peai--sou to be sewing- teacher Kiripaka s-chool. Mis,s vlsabelle Melville- pupil teacher to Te Mata school, Miss M. A. Hemingway pupil teacher to Dargaville school as substitute. Mr A. E. Reynolds pupil teacher fe "•'«■ Te Aroha to Kar-ang-ahake schorl, jMisa G. M. Committees have been consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows: —Papakura Valley No. 'J, Miss M. J. Johnston; Te Aroha (2nd assistant). Miss K. B. Jones; Katiaeranga Sandes-street (2nd assistant; Miss M",. A. An bin. Your Committee recommend that the names and qualifications of the following teachers be submitted to the. Otahuhu School Committee for the selection of a first assistant:—Misses, i\ A. Sommerville. A. M. Devin, and K. Keesing1. Your Committee recommend that the Hikurangi School Committee be consulted as to the appointment of Miss Eva Bower as assistant teacher. Your committee recommend that the Mangere School Committee be consulted as to the permanent appointment of Mrs Mellsop as head teacher. Your Committee recommend that the fiftyfour ("j4) pupil teachers whose term of engagement will expire at the 30th June next be employed for a period of six months longer as junior assistants. Your Committee defer for the present their recommendation for the selection of teachers for Whangamata, Paradise, Hunua No. 2, Otakeo, Taupo, Kawakawa (assistant), and of pupil teachers for Victoria Valley, Kati Kati No. 2, Katiaeranga Baillie-street. —The report was adopted. Finance. — The Finance Committee reported:—Your Committee report the receipt of the sum of £98 10/10, being balance of cash in hand from the Auckland Technical School Association. Your Committee report that, the sum of £'1743 5/, received ■ from Government for the purpose, has been distributed among teachers as an addition to their salaries for the March quarter, in accordance with the eondit'ions a.greed upon between the Minister and the Board. Your Committee cannot recommend the Board to adept the suggestion of the Chief Inspector to import all school apparatus for issue direct to the schools..— The report was adopted. Chairman's Report. —The Chairman's report staled that.the resignations had be^n received of Mr T. H. Gibbnrd, Tangaihl: Miss T. Masefiek!. Otahuhu; Miss F. E. Graham, Te Aroha. Technical School.—The Committee appointed to consider this matter reported:—Your Committee, having conferred with the Advisory Committee, recommend that, the seven instructors !of the Auckland Technical School be re-appointed for the second term of the school, with the same salaries, and upon the same conditions as those at-' tached to their engagement by the Association. — The recommendation was adopted.—A letter was received from the Advisory Board to engage as director a competent specialist, and that steps be taken to secure the site for the new school in Wellesley-street. —Ft was decided to take steps' to give ■ effect to the suggestions. 1 Flags.—The Minister for Education wrote that great difficulty in obtaining New Zealand Ensigns for the schools was experienced, but that 75 had now been received, of which 125 would be forwarded.to the Auckland Board. Salaries. — The 'Education Depart- | ment informed, the Board that it was ; The desire of the Government that the salaries of the teachers in the district : should, up to the end of June, be on the lines of the schedules already approved, and that a second payment on the account would be made to the Board ne:a month.—lt was decided to act upon the suggestion; ■ Meetings. — On the motion of Mr Blades, the resolution that the Board meet on every fourth Wednesday was rescinded. He further moved that the Board meet at 2 p.m. on alternate Wednesdays.—This was agreed to. Training School.—Mr Muir moved: "That the Board take immediate steps to acquire a site on which to erect a training college for teachers." — He thought that a normal school was urgently necessary.—Mr R. Farrell seconded. He thought young teachers were not sufficiently looked after. \ proper course of trailing-should be given them. — Mr Bagnall suggested the endowment of a chair of pedagogy at the University.— The motion, after discussion, was agreed to.
