A SUSPICIOUS DEATH

A BODY EXHUMED

SYDNEY, March 2

Owing to certain suspicious circumstances coming to the knowledge of the city coroner, the body of Conway, of Dunedin. a passenger who died aboard the Tahme on February 19, was exhumed from the Rookwood cemetery yesterday. The inquest was opened and adjourned to Friday. It will be retaenibered that when the remains were landed at Sydney the coroner dispensed with an inquest, the cause of death being given as a fit, to which deceased was alleged to be subject. The authorities are very reticent with regard to the matter, the coroner intimating that it would not be in the interests of justice to publish the evidence at present. The police refuse to give any information, but inquiries in other directions indicate that the police are acting upon rumours amongst other passengers that the circumstances' surrounding Conway's death were not altogether consistent with natural causes. Statements are also made that Conway was supposed to have certain valuables in his possession, but a search of his luggage failed to discover them.

The following was published by the "Sydney Morning Herald" of Pebruarv 22: During the passage of the steamer Talune, from New Zealand to Sydney, a second-class, passenger named E. Conway died whilst in a fit. On arrival of the steamer the body was removed to the North Morgue, where a post-morten examination was made, and as death was found to be due to natural causes, an inquest has been dispensed with.
