THE NEW HEBRIDES.

ME SEDDON INTERVIEWED,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j , . '; . ... -j

i WELLINGTON, this day.

A deputation from the ? General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church waited on the Premier with reference to the treatment .of natives and Bri« tish missionaries, settlers, and traders by the French in the New Hebrides. Mr Seddon replied that he was well aware of what was going on at the Islands. He was in communication with Mr Chamberlain, and anticipated that measures would shortly be taken to strengthen the British position in the group. He thought that the tirst step to*" be taken was the appointment of a British resident to go about amongst the islands. Directly those with grievances ■_ had someone there to appeal to, many of the existing- evils would be stopped; Nothing less than a Commission would settle the matter. The appointment of a Commission would, however, naturally take time.;"' ; The matter would have to be approached in an entirely diplomatic way.- v « :"{, ' V;-'1 , ■ '
