THE RAILWAYS.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.),

WELLINGTON, this day

The Railway Department. expects to place three of the American-made carriages on the section between Christchurch and Dunedin next, month, and the other sixty will be distributed over the colony in places where express trains are running within less than three months.

The installation of the interlocking system at the Wellington railway station has almost been completed, under the direction of Mr Wynne, the expert engaged in Scotland last year. The Railway Department intends to apply the system to all the principal stations in the colony.

There is now an immense amount of traffic on the Westport lines, owing principally to the development of the coal mining industry, and Mr Wynne has received instructions to fit up a complete interlocking apparatus there as soon as he has com-, pleted the Wellington installation.
