ONEHUNGA'S VICTORIA MEMORIAL.

The adjourned meeting of the Queen Victoria Memorial Committee was held inthe Council Chambers last night, Dr. Mm R Close Erson presiding. Mr Stoupe said he> understood that at, the public meeting, held a fortnight ago£ the feeling- was that information should tun gathered as to the cost of a statue, an&P also what would be the cost of construct-, ing an esplanade, He considered there was nothing before this meeting, seeing;: no such report was available. Mr J. Shaldrick said that at the last meeting the Question of erecting a statue. was fully discussed, and the feeling of the meeting was strongly in favour of an esplanade, for the reason that funds sufficient to have a statue erected which would be a credit to Onehunfi-a coul^J not be collected, while the esplanade was within \ reasonable reach of the people. A lengthy discussion took place, when; J Mr J. Robb moved that the report of the ; sub-committee be taken. ~' Mr A. Robb said the committee naa.: consulted two engineers as to the costof providing a plan of the works, together , with the estimate of the cost of the work: of an esplanade, and Mr Metcalfe had?; undertaken to do the work at a reasonable / price. Mr Edwards moved that the sub-corn-: mittee be authorised to" set Mr Metcalfe'9; ' estimate of the work. He desired to get::some memorial to the memory of the late. ■ Queen, and the only Avay of having the^., work done satisfactorily 'was to vote iot ; his motion. ■£.;■; Mr Shaldrick moved as an amendment that the secretary write to the Council-'/----asking that b^dy to provide the cost of;, the engineer's report at, say, £5 5/, and ; in the meantime the sub-committee to guarantee the cost. Mr Vause seconded the amendment, ' which was agreed to. The meeting adjourned till next Thursday night. ■
