The steamer Alameda was detained in a fog shortly before her arrival from Auckland, and the passengers protested against the vessel being delayed. When they heart! of the Janeiro disaster, however, they took a different view of the matter, and presented the captain with a testimonial, by way of acknowledging the care he had exercised at a critical time.
