FIRE BRIGADES' CONFERENCE

CHRISTHL'BCH, Monday
At the Fire Brigades' Conference, on the motion of the secretary, Mr Robbing (Hawera), it was resolved that In order that the lirenien of the colony may make better acquaintance with up-to-date fire brigade appliances, the association take into consideration" the advisability of endeavouring to arrange for the holding of a large exhibition ot such appliances, say one year hence; also that the conference set up a committee to draft a scheme for such exhibition, aud report to the confereuce before it closes. Captain Butler (Eden Terrace) moved, "That the association decide on some regulations as to the rank or title of chief officers of brigades, and suggest that for brigades of over 20 members the title be superintendent, and of under 20 members, captain; that second officers in brigades over 20 members be lieutenants, and under 20, foremen." The motion was lost. Fireman Hedley (Napier)' moved, "That rule one, competition conditions, be altered to allow a competitor who has had to get a substitute through accident or illness to resume his position in his team when able to do so; judges may, if necessary, demand medical certificate before reinstatement. Lieutenant Martin (Napier Fire Police) seconded the motion, which was carried.
Captain Pickering (Mas.erton) moved, "That on all firemen belonging to the association a levy of 1/ a year be made, the sum so raised to be devoted to demonstration prize funds." Captain Michell fHokltika) moved as an amendment. "That the rule be altered so that annual subscriptions be 50/ instead of 30/, and that £1 be placed to the competition account, the sum in It to be available for subsidising competitions." The words "for subsidising prize-money pound for pound given by committees for competition under the ausipices of the association" were added to the amendment, and it was carried. The motion was withdrawn. _ . _~ ,„ On the motion of Secretary Walton (Greymouth) it was resolved, "That in future all ex-presidents should be invited to the annual meeting." ______ ■ Superintendent Gilberd handed the president the badge of the International Association of Fire Engineer-, which that body at its conference at Charleston, South Carolina, had decided to present to the New Zealand president.
