A cm-respondent of a Taranakr paper says that an enormous eel was caught by Master Mathew Casey, o£ the Tawhiti, Nornianby, the otlies evening-. The presence of an old mais. eel had probably been suspected ijs the Tawhiti Creek, and Matt provided himself with a spear with a shorti handle, the metal part of which was bent double in the struggle which ensued. He speared the eel, which pulled young- Casey into the stream. He stuck manfully to the spear handle till assistance arrived in the shapS of pitchforks, in the hands of willing; friends, and a fork being stuck into the eel's tail, a rope was woven; through the hole and tM great fislS dragged ashore. He weighed 23$ lbsj. was nearly sft in lengthy 18in is girth, and'6in across the tail. , A supplementary contract has been entered into between the Wellington City Corporation and the New Zealand Electric Syndicate, Limited, for a term of five years, from the begin* ning of the current year. The Corporation has effected a considerable reduction in the cost of lighting. The advantage thus gained is to be used by the corporation in improving the lighting of the main thoroughfare* of the city, by the. installatioa of 8> additional aro lights,
