SWIMMING.
The Auckland Swimming Club held" a most successful gala, at the Albert' Baths on Wednesday evening last..Tha ; attendance was large, a pleasing feature being the number of ladies. . .
The racing' was quite worth coming', to see. The fields \yere large in most, of the events, and the finishes were most exciting. In one or two cases, the judges had considerable difficulty in. placing their men. Perhaps the best finish was that in the first heat' of the 72yds boys' handicap, when Kernott and Kean came a dead heat.* Kean, who was scratch, swam a great' race. The finals of both the 72 yds ' handicap and the boys' event were won by "touches." The second heat* of the 50yds girls' handicap provided, another splendid finish. Miss Rita Moritzson, a. very diminutive swimmer,; just managed to make a dead heat of if with Miss May Anderson, and re*., ~■ ceived thunders of applause for her.: effort. ..-,:!,.' ~, | The exhibition of life-saving drillprovided by Jour young ladies ; was most instructive, and was greatly ap\ preciated by the crowd. The Club hold their carnival in the, Graving Dock on Saturday next, 2nd ' March. Competitors are reminded, that the rule as to costumes will on.. that occasion be strictly enforced. . All, costumes and trunks rmist be of the t same colours, and any other kind will' disqualify the wearer. The Government have informed the. local centre that 2000 copies of,the Life-Saving Society's handbook' Trill arrive here shortly. The pajnp'luet \ prepared by the local centre foYuse in schools will be ready shortly;? : Says the Sydney "Referee": ''Cham-' ' pion failed to realise expectations, and swam no better than (in some instances not as well as) his K.Z. form indicated. Charlie Oliffe wrote of theY Maorilander's third in the Common-, wealth Hundred: 'Champion put up a fine performance in this contest; and will swim well in-the big sprint championship, but is hardly good enough to win. My opinion is that : sprinting- and not staying1 is the game he is best adapted to—at any rate,' at present.' And this estimate'proved correct, for, bar the two New South Wales cracks, Champion accounted, for all the others, including- Hogan, • the Queensland flyer."
Details of the 100 yds Champipnship,,, of Australasia, contested at Ballarat on Friday, are to hand. It appears Cavill's time (lmin 2sec), as telegraphed, was not allowed to stand on account of some mistake on the timekeeper's part, and he was given another chance in an impromptu race, but couldn't do better than.lmin 3* sec, which is a remarkably good per-. formance, though not ' a record. Bishop's lmin 1 3-ssec is the best' ever done in Australasia, while the world's speediest is Derbyshire's (England) lmin 0 l-ssec.
